Things To Do

Here is a collection of information and links we thought may be helpful when thinking of things to do and see while visiting Reston.  If you are looking to do something specific while in town, please let us know!

Reston is located less than 20 miles from Washington DC and Old Town Alexandria. If you would rather not venture out that far, here are a few things you can find in Reston and its vicinity:

  • Visit Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum
    • The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The building provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts, like the NASA Space Shuttle, that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. The two sites together showcase the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world. The Center also offers the Airbus IMAX Theater, flight simulators and daily educational programs.
  • Watch a show at the Wolf Trap Arena
    • Only four miles from Reston there are year-round concerts held at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, where the National Symphony Orchestra has its summer home away from the Kennedy Center. This venue offers world class performances ranging from opera and ballet to symphonic and popular music. Visitors can purchase reserved seats inside the pavilion or picnic on sloping lawns while enjoying a concert.
  • Ride an elephant at Reston Zoo
    • The Reston Zoo is a 30-acre family friendly zoo located in Fairfax County. Kids will enjoy seeing exotic animals, taking wagon rides, touching and feeding the friendly animals in the petting barn, and many other animal encounters including a free-flight aviary and reptile house.
  • Cool off at one of the local waterparks
    • The Water Mine is a small water park, complete with a lazy river, specifically geared to elementary-aged children. The park is adjacent to Lake Fairfax Park, which features a 20-acre lake with a carousel, picnic areas, campgrounds and athletic fields. Water Mine Admission includes unlimited rides on the carousel and tour boat.
    • Splash Down, about a 20 mile drive from Reston, has five water areas, covering 11 acres, includes a beach area, lazy river, boat slide, water raindrops and bubblers, pavilions for shade, children’s area with kiddie slides, lap pool and water slides.
